Ingredients

  • 4 cups blackberries fresh or thawed frozen, drained
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest optional
  • pinch salt

Equipment

  • Baking Dish
  • Mixing spoon

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Spread the blackberries evenly in the prepared baking dish. Gently mash some berries with the back of a spoon to release their juices, creating a juicy, slightly mashed layer.
  3. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the berries, then add lemon zest and a pinch of salt to enhance their flavor.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the oats, flour, and salt. Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Crumble the topping evenly over the berries, covering them completely with a nice, crumbly layer.
  6. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and bubbling around the edges. You’ll hear a crackling sound as it bakes.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. The topping will turn crisp and fragrant, and the berries will be juicy and vibrant.
