Blackened Baked Salmon

This dish features salmon fillets coated with a spicy blend of smoked paprika, cayenne, garlic, and other seasonings, then baked until the crust is crispy and deeply flavorful. The high oven heat creates a charred exterior while keeping the flesh tender and flaky, offering a striking contrast in textures and appearance.

Ingredients

  • 4 fillets salmon fillets preferably skin-on for crispiness
  • 2 tablespoons smoked paprika for smokiness and spice
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust for heat preference
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for coating the fish
  • 1 lemon lemon for serving

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly oil it to prevent sticking.
  2. In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper to create the spice rub.
  3. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels to help the spice rub adhere better, then brush them lightly with olive oil.
  4. Generously coat each fillet with the spice mixture, pressing it into the flesh so it sticks well and forms a thick crust.
  5. Arrange the coated salmon fillets skin-side down on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each piece.
  6. Bake the salmon in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until the crust is darkened and crispy, and the flesh flakes easily with a fork.
  7. Once baked, remove the salmon from the oven and carefully transfer to serving plates. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top for added brightness.
  8. Serve immediately with your favorite sides, allowing the crispy crust to provide a satisfying texture contrast to the tender, flaky flesh.
