Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes
  • 2 lbs potatoes Yukon gold or russet, peeled & cubed
  • ½ cup milk
  • 4  tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon  black pepper
Optional Add-Ins
  • sour cream
  • garlic cloves roasted or minced
  • grated cheese
  • Chives or parsley

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Strainer
  • Potato masher or hand mixer
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Mixing bowl (optional)

Method

  1. Peel the Potatoes
Peel the potatoes and cut them into even cubes so they cook evenly.
  2. Rinse & Boil
Give the potatoes a quick rinse to remove extra starch, then place them in a pot, cover with water, and bring them to a steady boil.
  3. Cook Until Soft
Boil them until a fork slides in easily, usually around 15 minutes.
  4. Drain Well
Strain them and let the steam escape so they don’t turn watery.
  5. Season & Add Butter
Sprinkle paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper over the warm potatoes so the flavors start to settle in, then drop in the butter and let it melt right into them.
  6. Warm the Milk
Heat the milk gently so it blends smoothly into the potatoes, then mix it in slowly until everything comes together.
  7. Mash, Adjust & Serve
Mash the potatoes until they’re soft, season with salt and pepper and give them a final stir, then scoop them into a warm bowl with a small pat of butter on top and a sprinkle of herbs or cracked black pepper.
